Talking Therapy Cardiff | Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

About the counselling process

Counselling is a form of talking therapy that offers people a chance to change how they are feeling and improve their wellbeing. Counselling provides a regular time and space for you to talk about your problems and explore difficult thoughts and feelings in an environment that is safe, dependable, free from intrusion and confidential. A counsellor will listen to your difficulties and help you to gain insight into your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, to help you to feel better.

About Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a type of counselling in which the therapist and client work together as a team to identify and solve problems. Therapists use CBT to help clients overcome their difficulties by helping them to change their thinking patterns, behavior and emotional responses.

CBT has been found to help a wide range of emotional health issues, including;

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • low self esteem
  • lack of confidence
  • anger management
  • panic attacks
  • phobias
  • obsessive compulsive disorder
  • substance abuse
  • eating disorders

There is a great deal of research and evidence that CBT works effectively. The National Institute For Health And Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends CBT for the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders.

The way in which we think can effect how we feel and how we behave.  During times of emotional distress we often think differently about ourselves and what happens to us.  Our thoughts can become extreme and unhelpful and this can make us feel worse.  We may also then behave in ways which prolong our distress.

In our sessions we will explore, identify and change any extreme or unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviors which may be contributing to your distress, with the goal of developing healthier coping strategies and more realistic helpful beliefs.

About the sessions

Lyneth offers CBT in one-to-one sessions that last for one hour from our Cardiff therapy rooms. The number of sessions you may need will depend upon the issue that you need help with. Often this will be between five and 20 sessions.

In the sessions we will work together collaboratively to explore and identify your specific difficulties, and to set the goals that will help you move towards the changes you want to make.

CBT is not a quick fix. It will involve hard work during and between sessions, and will require your motivation to want to change to improve your situation.
